Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 324520

Hob Uid: 324520
Location :
Nottinghamshire
Newark and Sherwood
Cromwell
Grid Ref : SK8020062500
Summary : Cropmarks of a winged Roman villa overlying the probable hut circles of an Iron Age settlement. The site was enclosed by a double ditch. Pottery and roof tiles have also been found. A small excavation has also taken place at the site.
More information : SK 802625. A probable Roman villa is visible on the west bank of the
Trent. Two narrow ditches 25 ft apart from three sides of a rectangle
about 650 ft by 500 ft; the angles are sharp. In the centre is a
building consisting of a range of rooms with wings at one end. In the
drought of 1959, two lines of large post holes were visible beside
the stone building; probably the remains of an earlier timber house.
Roman pottery can be picked up on the site (1 & 2). Todd considers it
to be a small portico-villa standing at the centre of a rectangular
double-ditched enclosure. (1-3)

SK802625. An Iron Age settlement underlies the eastern part of
the Roman enclosure, yielding a cropmark of remarkable
complexity.
Immediately south of the enclosure, there is a further area of
Iron Age settlement where several round houses are indicated by
penannular drainage gullies. Pits are visible all over the site,
some in rows suggesting timber buildings. (4)

SK 801625. Site NNE of Cromwell Village; listed under Roman Remains. (5)
