[Area SK 862357 (6)] Casthorpe, mentioned in Domesday, is a lost village assessed as East and West Casthorpe in the Subsidy Rolls
of the early C14th.

St. Joseph air photograph (NR9) shows faint indication of a
building towards the eastern corner of the field north-east of
Casthorpe House, and D.W. and R.C. Haw report mediaeval finds
including two spoons (7) from the same area (4) [approximately
SK 86333572 (5)].

Air photographs show the possible former extent of the village,
bounded by ridge and furrow. Crop and soil marks within the area
are indeterminate.

There are no surface indications of this former village. The farmer
at Casthorpe House states that all adjacent fields produce building material. (8)

The Medieval settlement referred to by the previous authorities has
been mapped from good quality air photographs. The features south
of Casthorpe House Farm were seen as cropmarks only. The
earthworks west of the stream have been ploughed and are now
visible as cropmarks. The rest of the Medieval settlement remains
are visible as earthworks still. A possible moat, enclosing an
area 40m by 25m, with an entrance in its west side, is centred at
SK 8626 3549. Two rectangular cut features in the interior of the
moat could be the sites of buildings. Four amorphous shaped pits
are visible outside the moat. The moat appears to be enclosed by
another enclosure, visible on two sides, completed by the present
road to the north and the stream to the east. Attached to this are
more boundaries, possibly remnants of crofts. More probable crofts
and croft boundaries are visible to the east of the stream, centred
at SK 8637 3562, and north of Casthorpe House, centred at SK 8609
3579. The possible remains of a building, possibly that referred
to by authority 4, is visible in one of the crofts, centred at SK
8612 3575. Adjacent are a platform and a possible fishpond. Ridge
and furrow is visible, west of Casthorpe House, centred at SK 8600
3545. East of the main settlement remains is a possible stack
stand visible as a square embanked enclosure, measuring 10m by 10m,
sitting on top of rig, and centred at
SK 8565 3553. (Morph No. LI.725.1.1-17, 2.1)
