Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 323627

Hob Uid: 323627
Location :
Lincolnshire
South Kesteven
Denton
Grid Ref : SK8726430782
Summary : A tessellated pavement was discovered in or before 1811 at "Denton field", 3 to 4 miles from Sproxton. The site has been included in Scott's gazetteer of Roman villas, in which it is noted that pottery was also found [NB Scott includes the site in her gazetteer under Sproxton, Lincolnshire. However, Sproxton is in Leicestershire. Denton is in Lincolnshire. Scott also provides an incorrect NAR reference].
More information :
".......within a few years, a tesselated pavement has been discovered in Denton field, and another at Wymondham...........All which are within three or four miles of the village of Sproxton" (1)

J B Whitwell MA (Keeper Leicester Museum and former Keeper Lincoln
Museum) has been unable to obtain additional information regarding
the above.

(Denton falls in Lincs at SK 8632). (2)

Included in Scott's Gazetteer (3)

Denton Field is described in source 4 as adjoining the road leading from Denton to Hungerton Old Hall, which would place it approximately SK 87242 30801 (4)

The Denton Field location given in source 3 would suggest that the tesselated pavement described in source 1 is the same as the Denton Roman villa mosaics recorded in record 323786 (5)
