More information : [Area SK 882292] Wyville and Hungerton [see SK 83 SE] are both listed in Domesday. There was a small church here, a joint rectory with Hungerton. By 1428 fewer than ten house-holders remained, and in 1603-4 it was said that there had been neither church nor inhabitants for some 40 or 50 years. It is not known if the present church, built in 1858, is on the site of the earlier church [See SK 82 NE 6 for possible site]. Slight indeterminate, marks are visible on air photographs. They are not typical of a DMV. (1-4) Wyville is an extant hamlet with its own church, (built 1858). There is much ground disturbance at SK 8823 2916 suggestive of shrinkage but no standings could be identified with certainty, nor could the church site (see SK 82 NE 6) be confirmed. (5)
Examination of all available air photography (including that referenced by Authority 4) identified the ground disturbance referred to by Authority 5; it is not considered to be evidence of either settlement desertion or shrinkage. The earthwork remains, centred at SK 8823 2916 are those of a curvilinear enclosure, 60m by 35m, which lies against the eastern side of a curving trackway. A number of small enclosure are ranged around the inside of the enclosure; these may be animal pens or other similar structures, or it may be a works yard connected with nearby quarrying.
