Summary : Landscape park and formal gardens to Rufford Abbey. Formal gardens were created in 1680 by Sir George Savile with further alterations made by 1725. Additions to the gardens were also carried out during the 19th century. The deer park was created during the 16th century, the landscape park dates to the 18th century and contains mid-late 18th century tree planting. Further improvements to the park and gardens were made during the 19th century. In 1969 the park was designated as a Country Park. From the 1970s the grounds have been restored and new gardens created. |
More information : (Centred SK 652637) Rufford Park (NAT) (1) Rufford Deer Park presumably was originally a monastic park. (2) The park is four hundred acres in area, with an oak paling and three hundred to three hundred and fifty head of fallow deer. It is delineated on maps of 1835 and 1840. A deer barn is shown at SK64686333 by Auth.5. (3-5)
Medieval deer park with 17th century and later landscape park and ornamental gardens at Rufford Abbey. The outlines of 17th century formal gardens are present to the north of the house, these comprise avenues, paths and statues enclosed by an 18th century ha ha. Other gardens include 19th century formal and Japanese gardens. The lake was created during the 18th century from a Medieval fishpond. (6)
