More information : (SK 68894801) Spital on site of Hospital (NR) (1) The hospital of St Mary Magdalene at "Bradebusk"(3) was founded circa 1252 for sick people. It escaped dissolution(2), but the commissioners of 1545-6 reported it as having one priest and no sick(4). The hospital stood a quarter of a mile from Gonalston Church (4). Only the chapel and a cottage were standing in 1797, and the chapel was destroyed in 1820(5). (The current 'Spital' name of the buildings at SK 68894801, and other 'Spital' elements nearby, most probably justify the OS siting). (2-5) Spital is a red brick 19c private residence with no visible remains of an earlier structure. Enquiries of the occupiers were non-productive. (6)
