More information : Shoby DMV SK 683 203. Documentary evidence excellent but archaeological evidence poor. Date of desertion c.1350-1400; cause Black Death or retreat from marginal lands (No RAF AP cover available). (1) Shoby is now represented by three dwellings. The three pasture fields to the south and west of Priory Farm show signs of disturbance but only a couple of field banks and some quarrying could be identified. (2)
The 1334 tax qouota indicates a small settlement, the quota being half of the local average. Poll-tax receipts from 1377-81 continue to show a declining settlement with 18 taxpayers perhaps representing a population of 27 people. From the parish taxation of 1428 Shoby had fewer than 10 households, but was not completely deserted until after 1450. (3) |
