Summary : Moat at Tickhill Castle. The moat is about 30' broad and is still full of water in parts. A portion of the bank, on the counterscarp, remains. It carried a wooden palisade as late as Cromwell's time. The moat is complete, except in the south, where it is obliterated by modern farm buildings and gardening. It is water filled on the north and west sides, and is fed by the mill dam at SK 5923 9283. Elsewhere it is heavily overgrown, and contains much debris. The depth varies from a maximum of c. 6.0 m. to a minimum of circa 2.0m. A portion of the bank on the counterscarp, from SK 59359295 to SK 5937 9280, varies in height from circa 2.0m. to circa 4.0m. |
