More information : [SK 51429888]. Tower. A solid semi-circular tower projecting from the outer face of the curtain wall, the tower base is strongly splayed. Originally the Tower rose above the walk, whence steps led to its summit. (The Towers [see also Yorks 284 SW 5.8 & 5.9], show perhaps the earliest use of round towers - for the purpose of bringing an enemy attacking the curtain into full field of fire- in this country) This mediaeval tower has been placed on the exterior face of the castle wall and has been recently renovated by the M.O.W. It is in a good state of repair being very nearly circular, 5.0m in diameter. It stands higher than the adjoining castle wall, but the top of it has been removed. There is no means of access to the top at present. The lower 2.0m. of the tower has been built of sloping masonry in the form of a 'talus' similar to the keep. [59 NW 5.1]. Construction is same as castle wall. GP 53/19/2 Correctly described by preceeding authorities. The remains of steps are visible on the inside face (E.side) rising from the top of the curtain wall to the present top of the tower Condition unchanged.
