More information : [SK 55055268] The Grange [TI] (1)
A memorandum from the chartulary of Newstead Abbey. formerly in the possession of the 1st Lord Byron, contains the following passage; "The said lord king (Henry II] gave also to the aforesaid canons at their first foundation, the field of arable lands called Abbayfelde, which lies between the town of Papilwyke and the monastery ...At the head, whereof, hard by the town of Papilwyke, the canons of the said monastery have made a grange and have ever kept that field for themselves..." (2)
The 'memorandum' "evidently was originally recorded on the Patent Roll of 24 EDW II (1350-1)" [Mentioned in connection with other material in memorandum - auth. does not mention grange] (3)
The canons' grange stood on or near the site of the present Grange Farm. (4)
The farmhouse is now known as Newstead Grange. (5)
The farmhouse is a two-storied building of modern appearance with no external evidences of a Md. building. According to domestic staff, however, a cellar underlying the approximate centre is supposedly part of the Md. grange. In the absence of the owner, Mr. D.B.S. Weston, it was not possible to see the cellar. (6) |
