Summary : Carmelite Friary extant by 1271, dissolved in 1539. Parts of the layout were observed South-East of the Market Place in 1923, but two-thirds of the site were covered as soon as the later buildings were demolished. However, the Eastern part of the development, adjacent to Friars Row, was observed in detail. A rectangular building aligned East-West, with encaustic tile floors, was noted and measured, but its function could not be ascertained. |
