Summary : Former parish church, raised to cathedral status 1914. Crossing tower, spire, chancel and chancel chapels circa 1430. Shrewsbury chapel 1520. North chancel chapel remodelled as vestries 1777 by Thomas Atkinson, and converted to a chapel 1914. Nave and east end reconstructed 1790-1805, allegedly by John Carr. Nave extended and transepts added 1810. Restored 1841 by Robert Potter. Transepts, nave arcade and west end, and east windows remodelled and restored 1880, by William Flockton. Chapter house, offices, and Chapel of Holy Spirit 1936-48, by Sir Charles Nicholson. Narthex, link and west end 1960-66 by GG Pace and Ansell & Bailey. Ashlar with ashlar dressings and lead roofs. Pre-1880 parts in Perpendicular style. Nicholson additions in Decorated style. 1960s additions in Free Gothic style. Chancel with side chapels, crossing tower with spire, transepts, nave with clerestory and aisles, baptistry and narthex, north-west chapels, chapter house, vestries and offices. |

Its present form is mostly of the restoration of 1880 but it incorporates 15th c. work and a 16th c. chapel. (2) In normal use. (3) 1. 1619 CHURCH STREET (North Side) Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Paul SK 3587 NW 19/113 1.5.52. SK 3587 SW 24/113 A GV 2. Formerly Parish Church. C15, cruciform, stone building of earlier origin. Much altered in C18 and C19 and now very considerably extended. Central tower with battlements and stone spire. aisled nave and chancel with 3 eastern gables. Lead-covered, open timber roofs, partly old. Large C13 to C14 style chapel to north, at lower level, added in C20 by Sir Charles Nicholson (?). Mid C20 connection to nave by G G Pace who extended church westwards with south entrance tower, all in modern style of Gothic derivation. Extensive additional buildings on north side: 1 and 2 storeys at various levels. Interior contains C19 Gothic pulpit of carved oak and font of polished grey granite and bronze. Also a number of good monuments including those to fourth Earl of Shrewsbury (died 1538) with 3 alabaster effigies, and to sixth Earl (died 1590) with effigy and large architectural display against wall. The Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Paul forms a group with Nos 2 to 14 (consec) East Parade and National Westminster Bank, High Street: also with the listed buildings on the West Side of St James' Row from Nos 7 to 16 (consec). CHURCH STREET (North Side) Statue of James Montgomery in Cathedral Garden SK 3587 SW 24/102 II 2. 1861, by J Bell (?). Standing bronze figure on pedestal of granite and sandstone.
