Summary : Regency house, thought to be on the site of an earlier house and a monastic grange. An alleged moat on the site is probably an ornamental pond.
More information : [Area SK 30625441] There are probable traces of a moat round Wigwell Grange, Wirksworth, which was given to Darley Abbey in the reign of Henry III. (1-2) A water-filled feature at SK 30655445 may be the traces referred to above. (3) There is no vestige of a moat to be seen at Wigwell Grange. The water filled feature referred to above is a stone lined pond of ornamental character only. (4) No change. (5) (SK 30645439) Wigwell Grange (NAT). (6) 1839 WIGWELL Wigwell Grange SK 35 SW 6/35 24.10.50. II* Regency. Ashlar; 2 storeys; convex bays at sides; 5 sash windows; cornice hood porch with coupled pilasters, surmounted by a balustrade with ball-head finials; parapet with ball-head finials. A 3-light convex bay to returned side on right. On the site of an earlier house and a monastic grange of the convent at Derby. (7)
