More information : (SK31890237) Moat (NR) (1) "A notable example of timber-framing (possibly mediaeval in date) is the fine Tithe Barn at Newhouse Grange, a moated site near Sheepy Magna. Leicestershire has few Tithe Barns and this one should be seen". (2) The tithe barn is at SK 31770235 and a dovecot at SK 31800230. The moat has been completely filled in. (3) A grange of Merevale Abbey; the house now essentially of c 1700. (4) The tithe barn is the only thing here worthy of interest. Externally it is much obscured by lean-to buildings but where visible there is modern brick filling between the wooden uprights dividing the bays. The roof is now tiled. The internal timbers are well preserved and include close-studded partitions and an upper storey at the east end. The dovecote is brick with over 500 nest boxes, probably late 18th c. See photo. Elimination of the small paddocks south of the farm and ploughing has accounted for the moat there, its course is now marked by a shallow depression through the crop. To the north only a couple of short stretches of bank survive. Not surveyed. (5) II* The Great Barn at Newhouse Grange Giant mediaeval aisled barn of seven bays. C.14/15. Timber framed, generally with recent brick infilling but with some parts retaining original vertical plank filling. Seven bays. Lean-to ends. The barn is of heavy timbering and has square pillars on bases with braces supporting a tie beam with curved struts rising from the tie beam and supporting a collar beam. The aisles have ties at the level of the wall plate with a curved brace rising from the outer wall. The main roof is continued over the aisles without a break. The slopes of the roof are divided into two bays between the pillars and have four purlins supporting the common rafters. The bottom, first section of the roof has two curved windbraces, the second none, the third four, the fourth, four, the fifth, none. No ridge piece; 6 common rafters to each of the two subsidiary bays to each main bay. Old tile roof. The three bays at the end of the barn have an inserted floor making the barn two storeys. Length of barn 150 feet. History. Said "to have been the store-house for the Leicestershire portion of the produce belonging to Merevale Abbey", White's Leicestershire. (1863). II Dovecote at Newhouse Grange C.18. Square red brick dovecote, brick band halfway up, brick eaves, hipped old tile roof. 600 nests inside. II Newhouse Grange Orton Lane In two parts; half early C.18 and half apparently early C.19 but said to be the older part refaced. Two storeys and attic, two gables at side, the right hand one later. Four windows, wood mullion and transom with leaded casements. Garden front has three windows. Side elevation, (with two gables), has three mullioned and transomed windows and modern bay on ground floor. Interior of C.18 part has fielded panelled room of oak. (6)
