Porters Lodge

Hob Uid: 312605
Location :
Sheffield
Stocksbridge
Grid Ref : SK2713096820
Summary : Remains of the gate-house of Bolsterstone Castle [SK 29 NE 1] the jamb and springer of one arch of a gateway and a small doorway with a shouldered lintel. A modern inscription states the date of this doorway is 1250, but this is inconsistent with weathering of the fabric, which indicates that the gate is later than that, and probably contemporary with Bolsterstone Castle, that is 16th or 17th century.

Remains of the gate-house of Bolsterstone Castle [SK 29 NE 1]
the jamb and springer of one arch of a gateway and a small
doorway with a shouldered lintel. Modern inscription states the
date of this doorway is 1250.

Porters Lodge is a mainly 19th. century building now used
as the village institute. Incorporated into its southern front
are the remains of the arch and doorway described by authority 2.
The date ascribed to this doorway appears inconsistent with its
present appearance. Its step although an integral part of
the structure, is less worn than would be expected, and the
sandstone fabric of the jambs, shows little weathering. By
comparison with the 16/17th c. remains of Bolsterstone Castle,
the doorway would appear to be of contemporary origin.
The remains of the arch showing many signs of restoration, is
too fragmentary to date.
GP AO/61/171/4 shows the SE aspect.

Condition unchanged. The building is not outstanding.
