Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 312213

Hob Uid: 312213
Location :
Derbyshire
High Peak
Derwent
Grid Ref : SK2152086850
Summary : A circle of 11 standing stones with evidence that at least three more stones lie below the ground surface. The circle is situated on level moorland close to the edge of a west-facing escarpment known as Hordron Edge and overlooks the upper Derwent Valley. The stone circle is dated to the Bronze Age and is sometimes referred to as 'The Seven Stones of Hordron'. The circle measures 15 metres by 16 metres and is of local stone. The height of the stones varies from 0.45 metres to 0.95 metres with the largest standing at the south west of the arrangement. There is no trace of an embankment surrounding the circle, as with several stone circles in the Peak District, nor of central features. The stones are arranged in three groups with relatively wide spacings between each. During repair and restoration work in 1992, evidence for at least three more orthostats below ground was discovered and it is likely that the stones were originally more regularly spaced. It is unclear whether the present positions of the standing stones are original settings, but many are likely to be undisturbed. Scheduled.
More information : (SK 21518685) Stone Circle (NR) (1)

'Stone Circle, Seven Stones in Hordron', diameter 54ft. 10
upright stones, 1 recumbent stone. (2)

A well-preserved stone circle, correctly described above.
Survey scheme at 6" scale with S.C.P.s (pending A/M plotting)
and large scale sketch. (3)

Situated at SK 21528685 in a slight dip on a flat topped ridge a
stone circle measuring approximately 15.6m. between the centres
of its 11 remaining stones. ('A' to 'L' on Authority 4's plan.)
Th stones, ranging in height from 0.5m to 1.0m high, are all
earthfast and upright except 'F' and 'H', which are fallen but
most probably still near their original positions, and 'L' which
is only the top of a stone just protruding through the turf.
(This could be Authority 2's recumbent stone). There is no
trace of any accompanying features such as a bank or ditch
and the interior is flat and featureless. The circle is almost
certainly not intact and possibly six or more stones may have
existed. There are several small loose (probably packing) stones
laid about the site but no trace of any larger ones that may
have come from the circle.

The name was not confirmed.

Surveyed at 1:10 000. (4)

Scheduled, number 156. (5)

Seven Stones in Hordron. This stone circle is unusual in as
much as it has no bank or central burial mound. There are many
fallen stones on its circumference and complete circle may have
contained as many as 26 stones. (6)
