More information : (SK 11740956) "There was of old tyme a fayre old crosse environ'd with steppes in the Market place of Lichefield. Denton, Dene of Lichfield, invironyd this crosse of late tyme with eight fayre arches of stone, makynge a round vault over them fore pore market folks to stand dry in". (1) The original cross was destroyed in the Civil War and replaced, circa 1652, by a small brick market house. This, together with the guard House within it, was taken down in 1785, and the present stone building erected by the corporation. (Denton was Dean of Lichfield AD 1518 (Chronicon Lichfeldensis).
