Summary : The buried remains of a chapel to Croxden Abbey, which was later used as Croxden parish church. Documentary evidence establishes that the chapel was sited directly to the east of the gatehouse and was constructed in the mid 13th century. This chapel survived as Croxden parish church until 1886 when it was replaced with the present church (St Giles's) 30 metres to the north. |

Croxden. "The 'Capella extra portas' of the Abbey, which was used as the parish church until 1885, was in that year pulled down and the present uninteresting building put up on its site". (2) St Giles Church - dedicated 1253 and appropiated to Croxden Abbey. Rebuilt in 1885. (3)
The Gatehouse Chapel was 18ft 6ins wide and 54ft long on the S side and 50ft 6ins on the N. The architectural evidence supports a mid-C13th date. (4-5) There are no visible remains of the Gatehouse Chapel. (6)
