More information : [Marginal] Medieval iron-furnace in the vicinity of Court-banks Covert. Inspected by members of the North Staffs Field Club, 18.7.1936. (1)
"In the spot indicated [the supposed site of Redmoor Abbey, SK 0I SW 10, at SK 04121183] are heaps of furnace slag, evidently of great antiquity, with 300-400 year old oak trees standing on and besides the slag." (2)
At SK 04161181 are large, overgrown mounds of iron slag, cinder and black earth, indicating the site of an iron furnace. A large pond-bay, at SK 04121179, is placed across the valley of the Redmoor Brook. The pool on the north-west is now a marsh. The pond-bay may have been constructed to form a fish-pond, or a supply-pond to the nearby Med moat - SK 01 SW 7. (3)
The pond-bay has been extensively mutilated by drainage and clearance work at present in progress. The owner states that it may be completely destroyed. The area of slag and cinder is conspicuous on the edge of a field at present growing a cereal crop. Published survey (1:2500) revised. (4)
The pond bay has been completely destroyed. (5) |
