More information : SV 91551292 (1) A circular building recorded by Carlyon at Bar Point; partly covered by a sand bank, and being eroded. An occupation site in the area of the above hut was first noted by Gray extending from the track ending at the beach (SV 91551283) to some hundred yards north where the ancient land surface dips beneath the sand close to Bar Point. The 'remains' seen by Gray consisted of small and medium sized stones scattered thinly through the black soil and not considered large enough to have formed actual buildings; no walling was found and heavy robbing in antiquity is suggested. The only structure was a small Tobaccoman's Hole at the south end of the remains. A fair quantity of Bronze Age pottery was mixed with the stones and soil, but very few worked flints and bones were present. Confirmed as a hut by Russell but not visible on air photographs. (1-4) At SV 91541290 on the rock-littered shore below high water is the seaweed-covered remains of an oval hut 3.0m by 2.0m internally with rubble walls 1.2m thick and 0.2m high; the entrance is not discernible. No other remains were seen. Surveyed at 1:2500 on PFD. (5) |
