More information : The Hospital of St Michael, Whitby, was founded in 1109 at a place granted by William de Percy, Abbot of Whitby (NZ 91 SW 10) to a leper called Orm. A monk was later appointed master and the hospital had a chaplain, brothers and sisters. Though apparently not mentioned afterthe 12th century, the hospital, which was wholly dependent on and managed by the abbey, probably continued until the suppression (1539) for the poor and sick after Leprosy became uncommon. Its site is still identified by the name Spittal Bridge (NZ 901103). (1 - 3)
