More information : (NZ 84110061) Abbot's House on supp site of (NAT) Hermitage (NR) (1)

A hospital or hermitage dedicated to St Mary established by
Henry I for the soul of Queen Maud and her heirs in 1109-14.
Subsequently Henry sanctioned the surrender of the hermitage to
Whitby Abbey. In 1206 King John confirmed this ownership.

In 1335 the abbot's close was at a place called Frerested. A
tenement called the Armitage, alias the Abbot House, was
mentioned in 1585. There is no evidence that after the hermitage
passed to Whitby that it became a cell of the abbey. (2-4)
