More information : (NZ 877880015) Ann's Cross (NR) on (Tumulus) (NR) (1) Ann's Cross - Socket and part of the shaft remain. (2) Situated at NZ 87780015 are the remains of a boundary cross (known locally as Ann's Cross) which comprises a square socket and a broken shaft. See photograph. This cross surmounts a heather-covered round barrow 15.0m diameter and1.2m high. Surveyed at 1:10000. (3) Ann's Cross is on the top of a tumulus, almost on the boundary line of Whitby Strand, but is not mentioned in old charters giving the boundaries. Not marked on Knox's map. NZ 8777 0016. Ann's Cross wayside cross on bowl barrow 800m south east of Foster Howes. Scheduled RSM No 25651. The cross consists of a base and shaft of fine yellow sandstone. The base is squared and is 0.76m wide and 0.51m high. At a point 0.31m above ground the base has been chamfered into the socket. The socket is 0.36m wide at the E face and 0.28m at the N. The shaft is poorly fitted into the socket and is 0.27m wide on the E face and 0.24m on the N. The shaft is 1.04m high and broken off at the top. This is also broken and repaired at a point 0.56m below the apex. Beside the cross is a portion of the broken shaft showing the slight curve of the cross head on one edge. This stone is 0.36m wide and partially embedded in the ground. The cross is set into the top of a bowl barrow which is 18m in diameter and 1.2m high. There is a 2m wide ditch around its base and faint traces of a stone kerb at its base. The cross marks the way known as the Pannierman's Causeway as well as the boundary between the medieval parishes of Goatland and Sneaton. (7)
