Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 28493

Hob Uid: 28493
Location :
Redcar and Cleveland
Guisborough
Grid Ref : NZ6137012680
Summary : A Bronze Age round barrow situated on Codhill Heights. The barrow has an earth and stone mound 8m in diameter and standing up to 0.6m high. It was originally surrounded by a kerb of stones which defined the barrow and supported the mound. The kerb stones are still visible around the southern and eastern edges of the mound but many of the others have been either taken away or buried by soil slipping from the mound over the years. A large earthfast boulder measuring up to 1m across is incorporated into the barrow on its north side and a modern marker cairn has been constructed against it. In the centre of the mound there is a hollow caused by excavations in the past. The barrow was mapped from air photographs as part of the North York Moors NMP, and is extant on the latest 2009 vertical photography. Scheduled.

0173 Godhill Cairn, Guisborough NZ 6137 1268.

Prominently sited on the top of a moorland ridge at 290m O.D., this
is a stone cairn. It measures 8m in diameter and stands 0.8m high.
It is bound on the north, east and west sides by the remnants of a
megalithic kerb. The cairn has been extensively disturbed and
now has deep depressions on the south and north-west sides.
On the north side, a modern marker cairn has been erected, utilising
cairn material, against a large earthfast boulder which protrudes
from the cairn.

Recent aerial photographs have revealed a rectangular arrangement of
fields, defined by stone walls and slight banks, attached at its
south-west corner to the cairn. The slight nature of the banks
suggests only a short period of cultivation, and the stone of the
cairn may result from field clearance. (5)

NZ 613 126, NZ 611 122. Codhill Heights round cairn and cairn
cemetery. Scheduled No CL/35. (6)
