More information : (Centred NZ 633124) Tumulus (Twice), Tumuli (NR). (1) Only two of the four published barrows are now visible:- 'A' at NZ 63441235 and 'B' at NZ 63181242. Both are prominent cairns, 'A' measuring 15m in diameter, 0.9m in height and 'B' 11.0m in diameter, 0.9m in height. Surveyed at 1:10 000. (2) 0171 Guisborough Moor, Guisborough NZ 6334 1234 Situated on the highest point of the surrounding moorland (320m O.D) is a group of burial mounds, of which this is one. It is a large mound of earth and large stones, 15m in diameter and 1.5m high. The sides are steep and well preserved, except on the north side where the stone has been used to construct a 'hide'. The centre has also been dug out in an unrecorded excavation. This mound is a scheduled ancient monument. 0192 Guisborough Moor, Guisborough NZ 6318 1242. Occupying a prominent position at 328m O.D. is a cairn of large stones. It is 9m in diameter, 1.1m high and is partly bounded by a megalithic kerb. On the north side this is replaced by a revetment wall, which still stands 3 courses high. The centre has been excavated and partly refilled. 0193 Guisborough Moor, Guisborough NZ 6324 1242. 60m east of 0192 is the alleged site of a second mound, but it is occupied by two large quarry holes, which together with their spoil tips, makes positive identification of any surviving mound impossible. 0194 Guisborough Moor, Guisborough NZ 6333 1230. 150m south-west of 0193 was a third mound which appears to have been destroyed when a new track was recently laid across the moor. The track, which was bulldozed and levelled prior to surfacing, either runs directly over the site of the mound, or so obscures it with spoil that it is indistinguishable. (4)
NZ 631 124, NZ 634 123. North Ings Moor round cairns. Scheduled No CL/36. (5)
The two surviving Bronze Age round barrows are visible as earthworks on air photographs, centred at NZ 6344 1233 and NZ 6318 1241. The larger east barrow has a central hollow suggesting excavation or robbing in the past. Both are extant on the latest 2009 vertical photography. (6) |
