More information : (NZ 6392 0847) A burial circle, 60 ft diameter, enclosed by a bank of earth and stones, containing cremation burials in pits. (1) NZ 6397 0845. As described, and in good condition. The circle is probably the remains of an enclosed cremation cemetery. Surveyed at 1:2500. (2) Situated at NZ 6397 0845, on the highest point on Kildale moor about 990 ft, is a sub-circular stone walled enclosure measuring 15.0m N/S by 16.5m E/W internally between a wall 0.4m maximum height and spread to about 2.5m all round. No entrance is evident and no definite facing stones. The centre has been mutilated by excavation and the wall in the E has been cut through by an excavation trench now refilled. Surveyed at 1:2500. The Bronze Age enclosed cremation cemetery is visible as an earthwork on air photographs, centred at NZ 6367 0834. It is not possible to determine the latest evidence for the feature due to dense vegetation cover on the 2009 vertical photography. (6) |
