More information : NZ 530335 Anglo-Saxon Christian cemetery thought to belong to the monastery at Hartlepool (NZ 53 SW 5) discovered 1833 when several skeletons were found 135 yds southeast of the present churchyard. Further burials were found in 1838, 1843, 1921, and 1932, some with memorial and pillow stones. Finds included a bronze pin, coloured glass and a bone needle. The memorial stones which bore Latin and Runic characters have been dated (on philogical grounds) to the 7th and 8th centuries. Most of the finds were dispersed and only seven of the memorial stones are extant. They are in the British Museum, Newcastle Black Gate Museum, and the Cathedral Library at Durham.
