More information : (Area centred NZ 52253390) Old Harbour (NAT). (1) An inner harbour was formed when part of the harbour basin was enclosed, probably in the reign of Edward II when Hartlepool was walled. (See plan) (4) (See NZ 53 SW 14 for Medieval Town Wall). The harbour wall ran from the North Gate (See NZ 53 SW 14 2) to the Watergate (See NZ 53 SW 14.3) and ended at a tower 36 ft short of the promontory opposite, forming the main entrance. (2-4) The Old Harbour, Hartlepool, is completely surrounded by modern quays and shows no traces of antiquity. (5)
