More information : NZ 528 338. Hartlepool was founded by Hien who established a monastery on the promontory circa 640 AD (see NZ 53 SW/5). The town was in existence by 1153 and became a borough in 1201. The harbour (see NZ 53 SW/12) and town walls (see NZ 53 SW/14) were probably built in the reign of Edward II during the Scottish wars. In 1162-1185 a charter of Adam de Brus, granted the customs of Newcastle to the burgesses of Hartlepool (a). In his charter of 1201, King John granted that the men of Hartlepool become free burgesses (b). The burgages listed in `Sadberge' are probably those in Hartlepool (c), although a `Sadberge burgus' appears in 1235-1236 (d). (3-3d) |
