More information : (NZ 59661414) St. Leonards Hospital (NR) (Site of) (NAT). (1) A hospital for lepers was founded, probably in the 12th century, at Hutton. The hospital was moved in the 13th century to Lowcross (see NZ 51 NE 29). Graves, in l808 refers to remnants of the hospital being converted into a farmhouse and out buildings. (2-3)
No surface remains of the hospital but sculptured stones found in fabric of outer walls of the house and stables at Hutton Home Farm (NZ 59601439) could possibly have come from the church attached to the hospital (see photos). (4)
(NZ 596141) Excavations carried out by C V Bellamy, 1965-67, and D B Hogg, l969, revealed the remains of a post Medieval farmhouse but no structural remains of the leper hospital.(see also YAJ 41 1966 43 1968 for details). (5) |
