Little Busby

Hob Uid: 27497
Location :
North Yorkshire
Hambleton
Little Busby
Grid Ref : NZ5100004000
Summary : Listed as the site of a deserted Medieval settlement, no visible remains.
More information : NZ 515042. Deserted Medieval village of Little Busby, mentioned in Domesday Book, probably represented by Busby Hall (NZ 51550416 - built cl770). The Rievaulx cartulary has a number of tofts and crofts here in gifts to the abbey. There was only one house by the time of the Dissolution. (1)

The establishment of a grange of Fountains Abbey at Little Busby (NZ 50 SW 20) may have been the reason for the depopulation of the village. However, half a carucate and three tofts here called a 'manor' were granted to Rievaulx Abbey in 1245. After the Dissolution, Rievaulx's lands, described as a messuage or tenement called Little Busby, were sold. (2-3)
