More information : [NZ 4909 3325] MOATED SITE [G.T.] (1) Earthwork Class C (Ramparted and Fossed Enclosures). At Low Throston there is a series of banks of irregular shape and of the most part of slight elevation.Standing on high ground the best preserved banks are in the S.E.corner.Points on the N.and W. have been destroyed in recent years. The whole work is too fragmentary to admit of any definite conclusions. There is a well about 100 yards W. of the site. (2) NZ 4909 3325.During the War(1939-45) a part of my land was occupied by a searchlight detachment. While digging in front of my house in search of stone the soldiers unearted a stone coffin.I did not see it personally as it was broken up immediately and used for foundations. (a) Area centred NZ 4906 3329.In those fields South and West of the farmhouse of Low Throston are a seies of earthworks representing the site of a deserted Md.village.The earthworks are typical of other deserted villages in the area and consist of low banks and ditches varying in height from 0.3m. to 0.8m.They divide the land into small polts, with small enclosures and low platforms probably representing the buried foundations of buildings. All the visible earthworks are situated in pasture land. The sunken trackway extending from NZ 4900 3327 to NZ 4907 3327 still has cobblestones visible and was used as a road until about 50 years ago, when it was replaced by the modern road to the South. The modern road runs in a cutting and where the earthworks meet the North side of the cutting there are many undressed stones visible. No surface finds were made. GP/53/133/7 & 8. NZ 490 332 Limited rescue excavations at Low Throston deserted Medieval hamlet were undertaken in 1972 (Plan 1). Two basic structural sequences were defined, which could only be dated by the associated pottery found. Phase 1. In the late 14th or early 15th century, cottages (D and E) were built together with another cottage or barn (C 1) and the western property (A 1). Phase 2. In the late 15th or early 16th century, alterations and extensions were made to the existing structures (See Plan 2 for details) (6-7) This site is still basically as described by Authority 3. The area excavated in 1972 has now been landscaped and overlaid by the new road and its cutting leaving no trace of any of the buildings. No building stances could be positively identified in the area to the N. Published Survey (1:1250) Revised. (8) NZ 492333: Low Throston Deserted Medieval Village, Hartlepool, Scheduled No CL/30. (9)
