Summary : The modern St Hilda's Church may possibly be built on the site of a Benedictine cell of Whitby Abbey, founded in the 12th century and dissolved in circa 1573.
More information : A cell of Whitby Abbey was granted at St Hilda's Church, Middlesbrough by Robert de Brus 1120-30, and dissolved before 1537. VCH (Authy 3) and Pevsner state that the cell or Medieval Church is now occupied by the modern St Hilda's Church (NZ 49612113 on OS 6" 1st Ed 1857). (1-4)
