Summary : A fortification has stood at the entrance to the Tyne since the C11 but the present fort dates from 1672. In 1888 it became the HQ of the Tyne Division Royal Engineers Submarine Miners and remained so until 1928.
More information : (NZ 3633 6852) Clifford's Fort (NR) (remains of) (1) The fort was built in 1672 and named after Lord Clifford. It was fortified, on the east and south sides, with thirty culverins and ten demi-culverins, trained so as to command the river. Some walls remain, but the keep, a three storeyed building with central turret, has been demolished. (2) The perimeter walls of the fort are largely extant and in good repair. (5) Excavation and recording work was undertaken following demolition of part of the surviving structures in the 1970s and early 1980s. (6)
