The fort was built in 1672 and named after Lord Clifford. It was fortified, on the east and south sides, with thirty culverins and ten demi-culverins, trained so as to command the river. Some walls remain, but the keep, a three storeyed building with central turret, has been demolished. (2) The perimeter walls of the fort are largely extant and in good repair.
