Benedictine Priory of St Mary, founded before 1156, well established in 1156-7, when a papal confirmation was granted, and dissolved in 1539-40. (2)
No structural remains or associated earthworks of Neasham priory are visible. Mr D Swann, the owner of the house at present occupying the site, found a sculptured stone head, 6 ins by 4 ins, wearing band mail, in his garden. It has been dated to the 13th/14th century and is now in Darlington Museum. In Hurworth Church there are two stone effigies, one dated to 1316, said to have come from the priory. (3) |
