Summary : Mid 18th century L-plan, 2-storeyed farmhouse on the site of a Mediaeval grange of Newminster Abbey. The grange was founded in 1138, and passed to the Crown at the Dissolution. Listed.
More information : [NZ 2392]. Unimportant or unclassified (granges, hermitages, large chantries etc). (1) Grange of Newminster Abbey [Northum 69. NW. 5] (2) Ulgham Grange:- Estate given to Newminster Abbey by R de Merlay by charter of 1138, for the purpose of founding granges. After the dissolution the Grange continued to be a possession of the Crown... In 1648 it belonged to Colonel E Grey, who was then resident. It is at present [1832] the property of Earl Grey (2a). Occupied by the Fenwick family until 1849. (3) [NZ 2410 9267] There are no traces of antiquity to be seen in the farmhouse or outbuildings of the present Ulgham Grange. The present owner could give no information. (4)
