Summary : Site of a double corridor Roman villa excavated in 1914, probably of 2nd to 4th century AD date. |
More information : [SU 95734798] Roman Villa [GS] (Rems Of) (1)
A double-corridor type Roman villa in the grounds of Limnerlease excavated by the Surrey Archaeological Society in 1914. It had a set of baths at the eastern end. Finds include C2nd-C4th pottery and a coin range A.D. 313-78. Scheduled (3). (2-3)
The visible remains are confined to now partly-destroyed built-up walling of flint and cement marking the lined foundations of a double & parallel-walled enclosure, some 5.0m square. This structure could not be identified on the plan of Authority 2. The remainder of the site is under pasture. On display in Guildford Museum "from Compton" and probably from this site are several bronze toilet articles and a coin of Valens (364-78 AD). No acc.No. Extensive enquiries in an attempt to identify this building with one "at Wanborough" (SU 94 NW 4) were abortive. (4)
SY 11 Listed as the site of a Roman villa. (5)
