More information : [SU 99354818] ST.CATHERINE'S CH [G.T.] (In ruins). (1) The chapel now roofless, was built on the site of an earlier chapel, (the chaplain is mentioned in a Pipe Roll of 1230) after 1301. It was ready for consecration in 1317. The walls show some good characteristic C14th features. (2) The building was a plain parallelogram of 45'6" by 20' 6" (internal). The 3' walls are mainly sandstone, with chalk dressings. The side windows over the N. & S. doorways were at some period converted to doorways with outside steps, and probably connected with a gallery within. The chapel may have become disused by 1546. It does not appear in the list of chapels or chantries suppressed by EDWARD VI. (3) St. Catherine's Chapel (M. of W.) Present building erected by RICHARD de WAUNCEY, rector of ST. NICHOLAS, consecrated May 1317. In part it was two-storeyed, for the exhibition of relics to pilgrims. (4) [Add references]. (5-8) The description by authorities 2 and 3 is correct.
