More information : [SU 8810 8106] Roman Building [G.S.] (Site of). (1) The foundations of a large Roman building were excavated in 1886 at The Firs, Castle Hill, Maidenhead. A furnace, hypocaust and bath with lead pipe intact were uncoveared. Finds include Samian and coarse pottery, two coins of the Tetrici and a coin of Constantinus was found nearby. (2-3) Mr. Underhill is of the opinion that the site indicated on O.S. 6" 1961 is incorrect. He played in the garden of this house, which is at SU 8806 8113, when a boy and found pottery in the flower beds. He has always understood that the Roman building was immediately south of the house, at approximately SU 8806 8110. No plans of the excavation are known to exist. (4) There is nothing in the garden of this house or the adjacent gardens to indicate the site of this Roman building. (5-6)
