More information : [Area SU 835500] Caesar's Camp [GT]. (1) A multivallate Hill Fort (2), the defences being strong scarping on the N, W and E and bi-vallate on the SW. [See Plan on illustration card]. SE corner mutilated by military field works. (2,3) Caesar's Camp: A multivallate hill fort with one recognisable south entrance: much mutilated by roads and other military works. The work incorporates boggy ground into its defences on the S.W. side, notable gaps in the couterscarp bank occurring. Published 1/2500 survey revised. A Ro.roofing tile from Caesar's Camp is on display in Camberley Municipal Museum, but nothing more is known about it. (4) SU 834498. "Low profile remains of a rampart, 7.0m broad, 60.0m to 70.0m from the south-west defences of Caesar's Camp, either an outwork or an earlier defence of the fort. The latter possibility is feasible since it takes in an embanked hollow way approaching from the north". (5) Excavations of a small area of Caesar's Camp by N Riall in 1970 suggested three Iron Age phases: phase 1 - a univallate site; phase 2 - a multivallate hillfort with timber palisade; phase 3 - replacement of timber defences by an earthen bank. There was no evidence of further activity until the Medieval period when a park pale (SU 85 SW 10) was excavated and spoil from it thrown up onto the remains of the phase 3 Iron Age defences. (The remains of the park pale may constitute the outwork referred to by authority 5). (6)
