POWDER CASTLE

DESCRIPTION + /

Earthwork remains of a siege castle associated with the siege of Barley Pound, 1147. The earthworks comprise a mound of near circular plan surrounded by the remains of a ditch and a separate outer bank. It appears to be a motte with an uneven surface on which quantities of flints probably indicate former buildings. A mutilation on the east side shows the mound to be of sand containing large flints. Scheduled.
