Landscape park to Lumley Castle is first documented in 1576. Much of the present planting scheme and gardens date from the 18th century and involved designs by George London in 1701, Sir John Vanbrugh in 1721 and possibly Stephen Switzer in 1729. Other possible designers include Charles Bridgeman and Thomas Wright in 1768. Some of these schemes survive as earthworks or in the planting schemes. The southern area of the park has been used as a golf course since the 1920s. This was expanded to include part of the northern area in 1995. The pleasure grounds contain lawns defined by a haha; in the early 18th century wooded areas were also present. The kitchen garden is situated 200 metres to the north of the castle, this was extant in 1718 and rebuilt and improved in the 1770s. (3)
