Goosehill Camp, excavated in 1953-5, is a concentric two ring
earthwork, classified by Lady Fox (a) as a probable Class II
hill-slope fort of I.A 'B' culture. Each ring has an apparent
original entrance and in the S.W. the outer ring cuts through an
earlier bank and ditch. Pottery found was all within the Iron Age
A.B. phase. Other finds included a 1st c. A.D. bronze brooch, a
flint axe or knife, a few R.B. sherds, and a coin of Constans
A.D.337-50. Plan, etc. See AO/61/343/3 AO/61/343/4, AO/61/343/5 and

Goosehill Camp is an IA hill slope fort, in good condition except
on the downhill side where it is destroyed; situated at 500 feet
above OD, on the E. side of Bow Hill at its northern end.
The earthwork is as described by Authority 2.
Near the centre of the interior is a scooped hut circle, 9.0m in
diameter, with the entrance in the S.E. side
Published survey (25" 1912) revised. (4)

Goosehill Camp, as described and planned, is now overgrown with
trees and scrub. Within the inner ring are two indeterminate hut
terraces, including that excavated in 1953-5 (Cutting III), and
the other surveyed by Phillips. (5)

SU 830 127. Goose Hill [sic]. Listed in gazetteer as a multivallate hillfort with widely spaced ramparts covering 0.27ha. (6)

Goosehill Camp. Brief description. (7)

Concentric enclosure situated on sloping ground. The inner enclosure is oval and is defined by a bank and ditch taking in about 0.5 acre. The outer bank and ditch, now incomplete, enclose about 2.5 acres. (8)
