Summary : Site of a Roman villa indicated by a surface scatter of flue tile and large red tesserae; pottery, tegulae and Horsham roofing slabs have also been found. Excavations have uncovered a sequence of buildings.
More information : SU 81801534. Concentration of flints and Romano-British roofing tile indicates the site of an RB building. Mr Boxall says that a wall was discovered when adjoining woodland was cleared in 1975. (1-3)

Note published claims that the concentration of flint and RB roofing tile "indicates that this was probably the site of a Roman villa". Apparently Mr Boxall reported the discovery of a flint wall when scrub was being cleared on the lower side of Batten Hanger. (4)

WS 99 Site of a Roman villa indicated by a surface scatter of flue tile and large red tesserae; pottery, tegulae and Horsham roofing slabs have also been found. Excavations in 1989-90 revealed the west wing together with part of an aisled building. Traces of an earlier building adjoined part of the west wing, and a later building overlay the eastern excavated part of the aisled building. (5-9)

Romano-British villa, with cemetery and assoicated building, at Batten Hanger, 600m south east of Hill Lands Farm has been designated as a scheduled ancient monument on 2nd March 2011. (10)
