Monument Number 245410

Hob Uid: 245410
Location :
Buckinghamshire
Bledlow-cum-Saunderton
Grid Ref : SU7978099010
Summary : The buried remains of a Roman villa, with a basilican plan, are visible as cropmarks and parchmarks from aerial photographs. The villa overlies the north eastern corner of a late Iron Age trapezoidal ditched enclosure.
More information : A large Roman Villa, of basilican plan was discovered on
APs in July 1962. (1)

Roman villa, 1 3/4 mile S of Saunderton (SU 79799905). (2)

Faintly visible on RAF A/Ps. (3)

Saunderton Lee Roman Villa (SP 799990) discovered recently by J
K St Joseph. It is a tripartite villa of unknown date and there
are reasons to suspect that it may have begun life as a
rectangular block of rooms. (4)

No additional information. The site has not yet been excavated. (5)

Field under stubble; no ground evidence, and no finds are known
to have been made. (6)

Recent photographs have shown that the villa overlies a system
of ditches forming agricultural enclosures presumed to be of
Iron Age date. (7)

Saunderton Lee Roman Villa lies near the north-east corner of a trapezoidal-ditched enclosure and the H-shaped house straddles the line of the ditch. (8)
