More information : (SU74086026) MOAT (G.T.). Supposed Site of CHAPEL (G.T.) (1)
Homestead Moat at HOLDSHOT FARM. (2)
At a very early date the prior and chapter of Merton had a private chapel within their enclosure of HOLDSHOTT. (a) By the end of the 14th cent. this chapel had apparently been replaced by that at MATINGLEY (SU 75 NW ).
A mill which existed in the parish of HECKFIELD at Domesday, (b) was apparently granted to the Priory, Robert de SAN MANEFEO removing all claim to the mill-pond in 1208. Two mills (apparently one at HOLDSHOT and the other at MATTINGLEY) were included in an extent of the manor taken in 1341, (c) and at the Dissolution a water-mill and a fulling-mill were among the appurtenances of the manor (d). The mill at HOLDSHOT stands to this day. (3)
The remains of a large kite-shaped moat. The western arm and part of the northern have been filled-in and can be traced only as a slight, unsurveyable depression. Elsewhere the moat averages c. 1.0 m. in depth and is partly waterfilled. The area enclosed is slightly raised, but no trace of the buildings of the grange survive. The house inside the moat and the now disused mill are all 19th cent. No trace of an earlier mill was seen. (4)
No change. Published 1/2500. (5)
