St Marys Priory

Hob Uid: 243533
Location :
Hampshire
East Hampshire
Selborne
Grid Ref : SU7553034470
Summary : Site of St Marys Augustinian Priory, founded by Peter des Roches, Bishop of Winchester, between 1233-4. Financial difficulties forced its closure in 1484, when it was annexed to Magdalene College, Oxford, and the priory buildings were demolished. Excavations have recovered the plan of the church and the claustral complex. The latter lay to the North of the cruciform church and consisted of the usual arrangement of buildings.
More information : (SU 75533447) Priory Farm on site Selborne Priory. (1)

St. Mary's Priory, Augustinian, founded 1233, dissolved 1484. (2)

The site has been under excavation since 1953 and the plan is being recovered. The Priory is centred at SU 756345. (See pamphlet particularly for the plan it incorporates which shows progress of work up to the end of 1966 relating the remains to modern detail). (3)

Extant and recognisable features surveyed at 1:2500. (4)

Excavations in 1963 by G E C Knapp, Miss T Ellis-Jones and D Baker for the Selborne Priory Excavation Committee revealed the plan of the eastern part of the Priory church. (5)

Further excavations in 1966 by G E C Knapp disclosed a second burial in a stone coffin, and in 1967 four more graves were found in the choir. In 1969 a series of three adjoining chapels was found east of the north transept. In 1970 the position of the west end of the church was confirmed, and in 1971 the plan of the main claustral ranges. Fragments of pottery and glass distilling-apparatus have been found on the site. (6-11)

Selborne Priory was founded by a Charter of Henry III in 1233. Proceedings for appropriation commenced in 1484 and concluded in 1486, after which the buildings were soon destroyed. (12)

Priory Farmhouse incorporates masonry salvaged from the priory (13)
