Summary : Crowmarsh was a grange of Battle Abbey as early as 1086. The present farmhouse dates to the mid 18th century and it is surrounded by a silted up moat, only the north-west corner of which still survives. The house is L-shaped plan, 2 storeyed. |

At Crowmarsh Battle Farm there are the remains of a large and deep moat. It is supplied with water from a spring. A hollow marks the line of the N. side, the ditch of the E. has been altered and all trace has gone on the S side. Crowmarsh Battle was a grange of Battle Abbey. Parts of the house are of some antiquity and the brick dovecot is dated 1684. (2)

Crowmarsh Preston (Cranmares) was held by Battle Abbey in 1086. (4)
Apart from a small fragment of water-filled ditch on the NW side of the house there are now no remains of this moat. The house itself is of little architectural interest being heavily restored. The dove-cot is in good condition. See GP. (5) |
