More information : [SU 68328099] Moat [G.T. - twice] (1) This earthwork, an Iron Age plateau-type fort, is situated at a height of 400 ft. OD on level ground which falls away gently on the W. only. The subsoil is gravel with pockets of clay. It is roughly pear-shaped on plan measuring internally 250.0m. N-S by 1640 m. transversely. The defences comprising two banks with a medial ditch (see section A-B) have been extensively mutilated by gravel digging and tree-felling, especially to the N and W. Along the SE side, the counter-scarp of the ditch has been destroyed by the construction of a woodland boundary bank. (see section C-D). The N. part of the earthwork, much reduced and masked by rhododendron bushes, appears deliberately to have enclosed a spring, which, according to local information, never fails. There is an original entrance in the SW. side with typical I.A. defences offset on either side of the causeway. All other gaps are modern. A 25" survey has been made. (2)
