More information : [SU 6433 7825] Camp [GT] (1) Plan of Bozedown Earthworks, Whitchurch, surveyed July 27th, 29th 1953. (2) This earthwork is a large Iron-Age plateau-fort in a commanding position overlookig the Thames valley to the south. It has been extensively mutilated by cultivation but where best preserved, in The Wilderness 200m NE of Bozedown House, comprises a strong rampart and ditch with a slight counterscarp bank. Surveyed. (3)
(SU 64337825). Limited excavation in NE rampart confirmed the presumed early IA date; through the recovery of pottery and a shale bracelet. Medieval pottery of late C11th date was also recovered. (4)
NE part of rampart is now ploughed out, although AP's of 1956 and 1967 show it to have been a cropmark. Eastern rampart is still c.2m high. Second entrance noted on the NW corner, where there is a gap in the rampart. (5)
Encompasses 58 acres; essentially a plateau fort. Univallate defences have suffered from ploughing; but preservation is in NE and NW. Interior has been badly ploughed. (6)
The Iron Age hillfort described above is partially visible as earthworks and has been mapped from aerial photographs. (Morph No.TG.312.4.1)
